Handmade by Hilda is a one-woman run shop founded in 2013 in Milwaukee, WI focused on heirloom-quality quilting. All quilts are unique - constructed with premium materials and detail-oriented processes. Tradition and heritage are combined with tasteful, simple color schemes. I anticipate and design each quilt considering various wear and tear potentials. Baby quilts for example will need to be washed frequently - I tend to machine-quilt these minis as a result.  All quilts are made in my (smoke-free) home on my Janome sewing machine.

FAQ

How does a custom order work?

Please message me with your ask, detailing desired size, patterns, colors, materials and finishing details. I will review and respond with a price quote. 50% of the quoted price is required to jumpstart your quilt (e.g. purchase of materials) with the remainder due prior to shipment. Progress on your custom quilt will be communicated all along the way with sketches, photographs, and status updates so you feel like you are collaborating right there with me.

How long will custom orders take?

Size and degree of finishing (e.g. if hand quilting is desired) can greatly impact the calendar. In most cases, you can plan for your quilt to arrive in 4-6 weeks. If I have the fabrics in my home or available locally, the clock can start ticking. If I have to order fabrics, it may take as long as 6-8 weeks.

Can I contribute my own fabrics?

Yes, of course. Fabrics that are important to you are important to the life of a quilt. In my case, the more sentimental, the more I use my quilt.

Do you collaborate with other Artists or Shops?

Yes! YAS. That's my favorite adventure; collaborating with your artist aesthetic or unique business need. The wall hanging above for example, was designed in partnership with Brett Stenson, for the Jolby & Friends offices. Brett hand-illustrated, using bleach, on a sheet of cotton before the materials were cut, pieced, and quilted into the final Japanese block: Meisen maru, symbolizing the ultimate collaboration between eastern geometry and western iconography.

All returns must be in their original condition and packaging sent back within 3-5 business days. Refunds will be issued once item(s) are returned. Please note, refunds will not be given for shipping and handling charges.

My Story

My day-to-day, as a Senior Art Director, reminds me to get off the computer, slow down and focus on a creating by hand. Identifying as a Maker is super important to me; it's my self-care, an opportunity to gain perspective and find work-life balance.

Hilda is a loving nickname given to me, Heidi, by an endearing friend whom himself inspires a community of craftsmanship. Mr. Michael Alt shares my passion for heritage - how stories are passed on to our friends and families through our most prized possessions, heirloom-quality goods.
